We're looking to promote community dialogue

One of the objectives of Westcott Radio is to promote more community discussion and dialogue on issues we have in common, whether that's Destiny USA or the war in Iraq. We intend to use a variety of methods for this, between airing nationally syndicated programming like Democracy Now! or organizing local programming that addresses the issues in the Westcott neighborhood and the City of Syracuse. We have lots of great ideas -- what we lack are enough volunteers to make them happen. Please contact us if you have any specific interest in this field.

"Democracy Now!"
Democracy Now! is a national, daily, independent, award-winning news program hosted by journalists Amy Goodman and Juan Gonzalez. Pioneering the largest public media collaboration in the U.S., Democracy Now!’s War and Peace Report provides their audience with access to people and perspectives rarely heard in the U.S.corporate-sponsored media, including independent and international journalists, ordinary people from around the world who are directly affected by U.S. foreign policy, grassroots leaders and peace activists, artists, academics and independent analysts. In addition, Democracy Now! hosts real debates – debates between people who substantially disagree, such as between the White House or the Pentagon spokespeople on the one hand, and grassroots activists on the other.
Youth Radio Project
We're recruiting youth to begin interviewing adults in the neighborhood about community issues and events. The goal is to train young citizen journalists how to conduct a meaningful interview and then how edit them into final segments to be aired. We're hoping to train youth how to ask hard questions of the adults around them and in turn to start questioning their common assumptions. We see this as an empowerment vehicle.
Programming focused on local issues and concerns
One of our priorities is creating programs that focus on local issues and promoting discussion of commmunity concerns. We realize that can be very time consuming and difficult to do well, which is why we're more than happy to work around anyone willing to give it a try. We will work around your schedule and bend over backwards to get you as many tools as possible to make this work. We're not looking for witty commentary so much as people committed to community forums where neighbors can work out issues with other neighbors.

Thanks your continued support of this project!
