We need more volunteers!
Westcott Radio is an all-volunteer effort. We have lots of great ideas -- what we lack are enough volunteers to make them happen. And the great thing is, almost anyone can help us, because we're seeking to do such a wide variety of things. The following is a partial list of volunteer tasks we're seeking right now, roughly in order of importance, however, we can probably use the talents of almost anyone willing to help, so feel free to contact us about areas not listed below!
We need computer savvy people.
Our webcast runs primarily on Linux machines (3 of them to be exact), but the person who set them up is no longer involved in the project. Therefore, we'd either appreciate someone proficient in Linux or conversely, someone proficient in Windows audio streaming solutions that can help us make the transition off Linux. We'd also like to set up software-based solutions for remote broadcasts and sophisticated audio editing. Our optimal goal is to have several people working on these things, so that no one person is doing too much and so we don't get too dependent on any one person.
We need help with the youth radio project.
We're recruiting youth to begin interviewing adults in the neighborhood about community issues and events. The goal is to train young citizen journalists how to conduct a meaningful interview and then how edit them into final segments to be aired. While we have some staffing for this, we could certainly use more and this is a high priority for us.
We need people creating programs focused on local issues and concerns.
One of our priorities is creating programs that focus on local issues and promoting discussion of commmunity concerns. We realize that can be very time consuming and difficult to do well, which is why we're more than happy to work around anyone willing to give it a try. We will work around your schedule and bend over backwards to get you as many tools as possible to make this work. We're not looking for witty commentary so much as people committed to community forums where neighbors can work out issues with other neighbors.
We're looking for people willing to help us promote local music.
Another one of our priorities is promoting local music as much as we can, using any tools we can find. This includes creating large blocks of local music for airing, compiling local concert calendars, recording local concerts for later airing (preferably after some editing) and using our website in creative ways.
We need more live music shows for airing.
We are committed to local & independent music. Any proposed music shows should take that into account. We just have no interest in duplicating existing local radio playlists when there is so much music not getting aired in Syracuse. Just be aware that we voluntarily follow FCC guidelines, which means we play swearing after 10pm and before 6am. And we actually prefer to work with people with no previous radio experience, as they tend to be more open-minded. But beyond those basic requirements, the sky is the limit, honestly.
